Maintenance costs

Everyone wants a more sustainable, greener and liveable city. But what does it cost to maintain them?

Here are two examples from real-world examples; our work on green infrastructure. Read on to find out what it actually costs to:

  • keep buildings and streets looking good

  • support healthy waterways and biodiversity

  • improve air quality.

1: Cost incurred by councils for WSUD maintenance

We can now conclusively say that our work has seen a 35% drop in maintenance budget for WSUD infrastructure.

Our maintenance contract with an inner-city council in Melbourne has demonstrated (with our sister company Wave Maintenance) that after three years the cost to maintain these assets (all of the raingardens, swales, and tree pits in high streets, residential streets and car parks), is 35% LESS with our regular and expert maintenance.

This is data based on the maintenance of over 150 assets, for three years, of various sizes and locations.

2: Green building maintenance and green walls

A green wall with various green plants and purple flowers.

Green walls are always a fantastic and highly visible feature in a green building or external facade. In 2020, we rebuilt a green wall (see the back story here) and since then have been monitoring the green wall and amenity.

We tracked the costs of maintenance over 12 months and found that we can maintain these green walls for just $30/square metre/year!

This includes water use monitoring, adjustment of water rates (this wall is external so is more weather dependent), weeding and soil and plant health monitoring.
